Subject: Tips on Writing an Email to Professors

This is the requested memo on emailing professors to request for a placement in their class. These suggestions can be helpful when writing an appropriate email to professors.

  1. Adding a subject line and state the course number and the request that is needed from the professor.
  2. Addressing the professor with an appropriate greeting, such as “Dear Mr. X”.
  3. Avoiding pronouns such as “you”, as it often results in resulting the reader.
  4. Eliminating abbreviations such as “asap” and “ttfn” to avoid confusion.
  5. Keeping the tone of the email professional.
  6. Excluding personal matters and focus on the request.
  7. Avoiding the assumption that the problem will be addressed by the reader.
  8. Requesting in a polite and respectful manner.

Above practices can be helpful when conducting an email to professors. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to email me at eric@gmail.com.

Cheers,

Eric Zhang
