Memorandum: Writing with You Attitude

Subject: Applying the You Attitude and Reader-Centered Writing

The You Attitude is a style of writing which looks at things from the reader’s point of view. The You Attitude can help you increase your chance to be added to the desired course. Please consider the following guidelines to writing a requesting email:

  • Considering the reader’s point of view
  • Including the subject
  • Using appropriate and professional greetings (e.g. Dear Dr.Lambert,)
  • Considering the benefit of the reader
  • Focusing on the positive
  • Expressing appreciation and gratitude
  • Protecting reader’s ego
  • Applying psychology to humanize the message
  • Avoiding imperative
  • Writing professional and respectful closing (e.g. Sincerely,)
  • Including conclusion and expressing appreciation
