Subject: Ten Best Practices for Using LinkedIn as a Professional Networking Site

The 2.2 assignment deepens understanding of how to professionally present oneself on LinkedIn. The online resume is now an essential tool of any professional, allowing connection with others and collaboration with colleagues worldwide.  Please find ten tips below for networking via LinkedIn.

  1. Keep your profile regularly updated and contact info accurate.

Active profiles attract more attention than outdated ones. To make relevant organic connections, your location/contact info should be accurate. (Ryan)

  1. Choose your photo carefully.

Your photo communicates a lot about you, so send the right message.  It should be professional and recent.  (Deehan) (Ryan)

  1. Consider your “Headline” as it will be the first thing seen.

This area can be used to highlight your motivations or goals. (Deehan) (Ryan)

  1. Detail your work experience.

Be specific and highlight your own relevant skills, rather than spending time describing the company itself. (Ryan)

  1. Cultivate a network.

LinkedIn and other networking sites only give back as much as you put into them. Spend time each week connecting with others in your field.  (Deehan) (Ryan)

  1. Get recommendations.

LinkedIn provides a way to request and receive official recommendations from other users. This allows potential future employers to verify endorsements of your work from other professionals. (Ryan)

  1. Use the endorsement feature.

Improve the depth of your network by giving/receiving endorsements from one professional to another. (Deehan)

  1. Use “buzzwords” with caution.

The overuse of clichéd terms such as ‘strategic’, ‘experienced’, ‘passionate’, makes your resume seem weak. Ensure any of these words are backed up with concrete evidence from your personal portfolio of skills. (Deehan)

  1. Use the Skills Assessment feature.

Those who complete Skills Assessments on LinkedIn are 30% more likely to get hired. (Ryan)

  1. Connect with recruiters.

Recruiters often work directly within LinkedIn to find employees. (Ryan)
