LinkedIn is one of the most popular websites used for professional networking and career development. It allows job seekers to build credibility, create a meaningful network and get a taste of insider expertise from established experts in a given industry. Just as professional etiquette is important in a workplace setting, it is equally just as important to keep the following points in mind when utilizing this networking platform.

• Always use polite and professional language (Dodaro)

• Networking and connecting with other individuals should always be done with purpose and intent (Dodaro)

• Always personalize messages, including connection requests (Dodaro)
• Send a welcome/thank you message when appropriate (Ku)
• Respond promptly to messages received (Dodaro)
• Include a professional headshot as a profile picture (Dodaro)

• Spark interest with a headline and personal description (Ku)
• Adjust privacy settings to ensure the account is public and visible to everyone (Dodaro)

• Share content that is considered valuable by your ideal prospects and clients (Dodaro)
• Keep the space positive, refrain from the use of negative language (Dodaro)

Making connections on LinkedIn should be driven by the idea of connecting with individuals who can help you professionally, or vice versa. It’s important to keep the above points in mind in order to connect, learn and build a personal brand in a professional manner.  A key point is that LinkedIn is a social media platform, meaning etiquette may change over time as trends come and go. Therefore, it is equally essential to stay on top of what is appropriate and what is not as a frequent user to maintain a reputable platform.
