Subject: Formal Report – Progress Report Memorandum
Dear Dr. Paterson,
Following assignment instructions on the ENGL301 blog, the formal report outline of my research is posted. Below are details of the progress report.
Audience:
The reader of this report will be officers of the Equity and Inclusion Office in UBC including Manager of Institutional Planning and Evaluation Charlene Phung, Lucy Buchanan-Parker the Planning & Evaluation Strategist, Equity Education Strategist Jenica Frisque, Rachael Sullivan, and lastly Elsie Achugbue, the Director of Institutional Initiatives. These intended readers were selected because they are the one who is developing equity programs and inclusion project to promote gender equity within UBC. Providing the report to them not only can advocate the issues and bring more awareness but also may turn some suggestions in the report into reality.
Purpose of the Report:
As UBC still has had a low female enrollment rate for the computer science major for past years, this report is designed to provide measurements to bridge the gender gap in the computer science major.
Significance of the Report:
This report should be able to raise awareness about gender disparity in the computer science program to the Equity and Inclusion Office and offer potential solutions to develop more useful resources for promoting gender equity in the computer science major.
Research Plan:
- Background of gender disparity issue for the computer science major in UBC with graph illustration.
- Investigating the reasons that cause low enrollment rate for female students in the computer science major.
- Identify primary data sources, such as interviewing UBC computer science and non-computer science major undergraduate male and female students.
- Compose surveys questions to potential interviewees from UBC.
- Conduct secondary research plans which include research on publications around dilemmas for women to succeed in the computer science program and measurements for bridging the gender gap within the field.
- Analyze the data collected through interviews, and organize the paper and publication found online.
- Generate the formal report according to findings.
