From: Dennis Tianxiang Deng
Date: July 8, 2022
Subject: Progress report: Improving Expensive Student Housing at UBC

As requested, I have posted my formal report outline for determining the cause and impact of Expensive Student Housing at UBC with possible solutions to ease the challenge. Please review my memo detailing the progress of my formal report.

Purpose and Significance of Report

The purpose of the formal report is to analyze the cause and impact of the student housing affordability issues UBC students face nowadays and seek possible solutions to reducing the student housing cost at UBC.  Living on campus has become more expensive every year, yet housing fees charged by the university have become a necessary source of revenue, now more than ever.

Intended Audience

Andrew Parr, who is the acting Associate Vice-President, Student Housing and Community Services (SHCS) at UBC.

Report Objectives

  • To determine the cause and impacts of the rising student housing cost at UBC
  • To determine the feasibility of resolving issues using more sustainable measures and possible land development.
  • To provide recommendations on collaborating with other landowners.

Research Plan: The following tasks will be included as the scope of the research plan:

  1. Perspectives of students living/renting at UBC 2
  2. Revise interview questions according to feedback & confirm interview time and date
  3. A Review of the changes/differences in the recent years
  4. Research into why it is hard to cut down the price for students and the school
  5. Data analysis on interviews
  6. Produce visuals based on secondary research and interview data

Methods

My primary data sources will be:

  • An informational interview with Andrew Parr
  • An online anonymous survey to collect opinions from student residents.
  • My secondary sources will base on existing research into student housing challenges in different regions.
