- Generating a polished LinkedIn profile and social media presence, with well-formatted professional history and appropriate photos
- Networking with organizations who also hold your ideals and goals, including those organizations you are not yet directly professionally associated with
- Following up with people you have met in person to ensure the continuation and development of a working relationship
- Understanding digital search formats and SEO tactics to ensure your profile can be easily found and brought to the attention of those searching for it
- Use individual dialogue when communicating with other professionals, as stock messages can easily come off as insincere
- Create a clear and defined professional identity, so that what you can potentially offer a workplace or business partnership is immediately clear
- Present yourself in a clear and conscientious manner without exaggerating or inflating your skills and abilities
- Use the LinkedIn Endorsements system to create further networking opportunities for those who know you and those you know
- Connect your LinkedIn presence to your cohesive professional identity — include it on your resume and any other relevant professional profiles
- Studiously update your LinkedIn profile to ensure people who seek you out have a clear and current understanding of your occupational acumen
Conclusion
Use LinkedIn as a tool to define your professional personality in concert with your in-person presentation. LinkedIn benefits from specificity of language and identity, so you can clearly present yourself to prospective employers.
