SUBJECT: Best Practices for Writing Professional E-mails

Thanks for reaching out to our class! I understand how it can be hard to write a short yet efficient memo, while keeping professional. Enclosed in this memo are some useful tools to keep in mind for writing effective and professional emails to professors. The following response should help with getting a timely response.

 

Tips for writing professional emails:

  • Establishing appropriate email composition, such as subject line, greeting, concise body text, and closing note.
  • Directing. Address the reader by greeting them as you would in person.
  • Be Considerate keep in mind the readers, perspective. Understand that they may have other things effecting their response time.
  • Maintain Professionalism by focusing on the purpose of your email, and with-holding from personal matters.
  • Have courtesy. Appreciate that the reader is taking time to consider your situation. Show appreciation, and be kind.
  • Refrain from being impolite, and engaging in actions such as rushing, or making rude comments.
