Subject: 301 Progress Report: Proposal for Determining Optimal Class Organization Practices on the Messaging and Communication App ‘Discord’

Purpose of Report
Student Discord servers are a commonplace facet of university courses, but Discord servers of many classes are poorly run and lead to academically risky interactions between students who don’t understand the platform or how it is intended to be used.

Intended Audience
UBC professors and students who wish to protect themselves from overly broad academic misconduct allegations resulting from improper management of online community spaces.

Methods
Data collection is primarily performed in survey form. Students across a wide cross-section of UBC majors are being polled. In addition, interviews are conducted with experts on Discord servers as community meeting places. Survey link is available here:
