Subject: Summary of Research on Professional Networking on LinkedIn

As per requirements of the assignment 2.2, I researched strategies for professional networking on LinkedIn. The best practices include:

  • Using LinkedIn features to find relevant people: Advanced search filters, “People you may know” section, as well as groups can lead to more relevant connections (Smulders; Schaffer).
  • Making personal profile stand out: Completing the profile is akin to telling a story. Adding a professional picture and filling out most fields can signal potential mutual benefit to possible connections (lIlodibe; Pope; Schaffer; Smulders).
  • Creating content: Posting engaging content and starting relevant discussions can help to stand out just like a successful profile (Smulders; Schaffer).
  • Engaging primarily via warm leads: People are much more likely to connect if approached through referrals by people they already know (Schaffer).
  • Making connections personalized: Writing a connection request accompanied by a personalized message is much more likely to result in people responding (lIlodibe; Pope; Schaffer; Smulders).
  • Engaging with people in your network: Making connections is just the first step in network building. Engaging with people and reposting their content can help maintaining and strengthening relationships with them (Smulders).
  • Communicating professionally: LinkedIn is a professional social network, and just like in other types of business communications, networking via LinkedIn should be professional, polite, and reasonable (Schaffer).

Overall, gradually expanding the network using many of the useful LinkedIn features and engaging with the existing connections while keeping everything professional are the keys to successful networking. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
