Revised Definition of Registered KInesiologist

Introduction: General public usually associate a Kinesiologist with exercise instructor who teaches a fitness class or works as a personal trainer. But a registered Kinesiologist is in fact a regulated health practitioner in Canada.  This assignment is adopting three types of methods – parenthetical, sentence, and expended definitions to illustrate a picture of a Registered Kinesiologist:

Parenthetical Definition

Registered Kinesiologists are human movement specialists who are regulated and governed by provincial professional kinesiology associations with the exception of the province of Ontario.

Sentence Definition

Registered Kinesiologists are provincial regulated health practitioner who study human movement, physical and sport activity and apply their knowledge to promote public health, enhance athletic performance, increase physical activities in society, and improve quality of life.

Expanded Definition

As university-educated professionals, Registered Kinesiologists are provincial regulated health practitioners who have extensive knowledge about human movement science. Kinesiologists help you to:

  • Prevent and treat movement disorders caused by illness or injury through appropriate exercise prescription.
  • Improve your physical performance in sport, work and daily activities.
  • Oversee or assist with the implementation of your individual health care plan.
  • Assess workplace demands and provide workplace ergonomics design services to help prevent and/or recovery from injury.
  • Provide support in rehabilitation and wellness management.

How are Kinesiologists regulated?

The Canadian Kinesiology Alliance (CKA) and its affiliated provincial kinesiology association partners are the official and relevant reference bodies with respect to the standards of practice and the requirements of the profession. Since 2013, the profession of kinesiology in Ontario has become a legislated health profession with the creation of the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario (CKO). Requests for formal recognition of the profession have been made in other provinces and work is proceeding with the relevant authorities. At present, the CKA and its recognized provincial partners (PKAs) are the only official associations that maintain, and advocate for, the standards of kinesiology practice and the requirements of the profession.

Where do Kinesiologists work?

A Kinesiologist usually works in interdisciplinary teams, such as physicians, dietitians, physiotherapists, and other members to ensure patients receive integrated best-practices care for safe and effective treatment. A Kinesiologist may also work independently in the community depending on clients’ needs.

What do Kinesiologists do?

Health Promotion: Kinesiologists promote health and work with individuals to enhance their health, fitness, and well-being. An example is working as a personal trainer at the fitness center.

Clinical/Rehabilitation: Kinesiologists work with individuals with disabilities to help them regain optimal physical function. Training a stroke patient for enhancing mobility is an example.

Ergonomics: Kinesiologists work in industry to assess the suitability of workstation design and provide suggestions for modifications and assistive devices. The ergonomics work table is an example below.

Health and safety: Kinesiologists are involved in consulting with industry to identify hazards and provide recommendations and solutions to optimize the health and safety of workers. For example, arranging warehouse settings for a safe loading/unloading condition for workers.

Disability management and case coordination: Kinesiologists provide a plan of action for returning an injured individual to their optimal function in all aspects of life.

Conclusion

Registered Kinesiologists, as descripted above, work in broad areas of health promotion, sports performance training, and rehabilitation. Kinesiology interventions are varied and target all population regardless of age or health status.
