2.1 Proposal

Subject: Proposal for promoting healthy sleep habits among UBC students

Introduction:

UBC students often struggle with getting adequate and quality sleep, which can negatively impact their academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being. Lack of sleep can lead to increased stress levels, decreased concentration, and a weakened immune system, among other negative effects. To address the issues of poor sleep habits among UBC students, I propose increasing education on healthy sleep habits.

Intended Audience:

UBC students, UBC health education alliance club (contact with Peter Wu, programs coordinator and UBC medical student)

Statement of Problem:

Many UBC students do not prioritize sleep, leading to poor sleep hygiene, which can negatively impact their academic and personal life. The transition to university can be challenging, and students often have to balance academic responsibilities with work, extracurricular activities, and social life, leading to poor sleep habits. Moreover, students may also struggle with stress, anxiety, and depression, which can interfere with sleep.

Proposed Solution:

To address these issues, I propose the implementation of a program that focuses on promoting healthy sleep habits among UBC students, including the following components:

  1. Sleep education: Provide educational materials and workshops to students about the importance of sleep, sleep hygiene, and the negative effects of sleep deprivation. This can be done in collaboration with health services and counseling services.
  2. Sleep environment: Create a conducive sleep environment in residence halls and other student housing, such as providing noise-reducing earplugs, room-darkening curtains, comfortable bedding, and regulating temperature.
  3. Relaxation techniques: Promote relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation to help students manage stress and anxiety that can interfere with sleep.
  4. Flexible class schedules: Offer flexible class schedules that accommodate students’ sleep patterns, such as avoiding early morning classes and evening exams.

Scope:

To assess the feasibility of implementing this program, I will ask the following four questions:

  1. What is the demand for sleep education among UBC students?
  2. What is the cost of implementing the program, including the cost of providing sleep environment equipment?
  3. What is the best way to promote the program to students and encourage participation?
  4. What are the potential barriers to implementing the program, and how can these be addressed?

Methods:

The primary method for this proposal will be to conduct a survey of UBC students to assess their sleep habits and the demand for a sleep promotion program. The survey will be distributed through email and social media, and participation will be voluntary and anonymous. Outreach will be conducted through student clubs and student support organizations to encourage participation.

Qualifications:

I have experienced the effects of poor sleep during my time at UBC and understand the importance of healthy sleep habits. Additionally, I have worked with health and wellness organizations for several years in promoting sleep education.

Conclusion:

Promoting healthy sleep habits among UBC students is crucial for their academic and personal success. By implementing a program that focuses on promoting healthy sleep habits, UBC students can improve their sleep hygiene, which can positively impact their academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being. I hope that you will consider this proposal and work with me to implement a sleep promotion program at UBC.
