There are two major rules of persuasion for Formal Reports

  • Avoid the Negative
  • Employ YOU Attitude

Turning the negative into the positive:

Examples:

Negative:  With a decrease of events and marketing, fewer students are inspired to participate in club activities and in turn, a decrease in interest for the role law has in societal problems.

Positive: An increase of events and marketing will inspire more student participation and in turn an increased interest for the role of law in correcting societal problems

Negative:  The ample amount of funds that the AMS supplies us with at the beginning of the year may not be available to the club if the membership numbers do not reach a fuller potential.

PositiveIn addition, the Club’s budget will not only be used more efficiently — maintaining a healthy membership is essential for keeping the budget.

Negative: “Low student turn-out at varsity games means that the athletic department does not generate revenue from the games. This also negatively affects the perception of UBC as a school with low school spirit.

Positive: Increasing student turn-out will increase income for the athletic department and positively impact school spirit.

Negative: “Despite training sessions in the first week and the performance review in the last week of the term, there is no in-between departmental support program for teaching assistants to regularly review and improve performance and teaching skills throughout the term. The lack of regular support for teaching assistants throughout the term can result in inadequate performance and poor quality of course delivery.”

Positive: While there are training sessions in the first week and performance reviews in the last week of the term, a support program for teaching assistants during the term will improve performance and increase teaching skills. With regular support for teaching assistants throughout the term, the quality of course delivery will improve.
