Subject: Ten Best Practices for Using LinkedIn as a Professional Networking Site

As requested in Lesson 2:2, I conducted research on best practices for using LinkedIn as a professional networking platform. The following list of ten best practices is the findings from the research.

  1. Adding an appropriate profile picture – Uploading a recent, professional profile picture can help to capture people’s attention before reading the full profile.
  2. Joining LinkedIn groups – Joining a LinkedIn group can increase opportunities to interact with professionals in the same industry. The observation states that about 80% of the people who found a new position within three months had joined LinkedIn groups (Chad).
  3. Adding new connections – Adding new connections in the same industry will increase the chance of the profile appearing in others’ searches.
  4. Following relevant companies – Companies regularly share news about their contributions to the industry as well as postings about the latest industry trends.
  5. Creating a custom URL – Linkedin allows users to customize the public profile URL for free. A unique URL helps people to identify and remember the profile from many other search results.
  6. Asking recommendations – Having a personal testimonial from a former boss or colleague will increase the credibility of the profile.
  7. Completing relevant courses on LinkedIn Learning – Sharing the completion of relevant courses on LinkedIn Learning can help to showcase the new skills earned as well as the passion for learning.
  8. Taking a skills assessment – Passing a skills assessment can help to increase the credibility of the skills stated in the profile.
  9. Creating a profile in an additional language – Having a profile in more than one language can increase the chances of networking with more professionals.
  10. Including visual content – Relevant background cover and engaging visual content in the Featured section can help to capture people’s attention from the text-heavy profiles.

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional networking platform. More than 900 million users in more than 200 countries use Linkedin for professional networking (“About Linkedin.”). By following the above best practices for using LinkedIn as a professional networking platform, you can broaden the opportunities to connect and network with people in your professional field.
