Subject: Best Practices for Writing Emails to Professors

Thank you for reaching out to ENGL 301 for advice on writing a professional email to Professor Lambert.  Below are some suggestions to maintain respectful and effective communication.

  • Using a UBC e-mail address ensures the professor knows it is from a reliable source.
  • Including a clear subject allows the professor to know what the email is referencing and increases chances of a timely response.
  • Using a formal greeting initiates professional correspondence.
  • An brief introduction will provide context and establish a friendly, yet professional tone.
  • Avoiding the use of imperatives and the pronouns “I/you” will minimize sounding demanding or condescending.
  • Focusing on a genuine interest in the course versus its convenience will strengthen the request.
  • Ensuring format, grammar and typos have been addressed conveys clarity and effort.
  • Concluding the email by expressing gratitude for their time and consideration will leave a positive impression.

Composing an effective email in academic and professional settings takes practice, however, it is crucial for successful communication. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at jenndunbarprod@gmail.com.
