WORK EXPERIENCE

Environmental Health Officer                                                                                                      2006 – Present

Vancouver Coastal Health Authority (VCH) – Richmond, BC

  • Conduct thorough inspections of food establishments, food manufacturing plants, recreational aquatic facilities, and personal service establishments.
  • Investigate suspected foodborne illnesses, outbreaks and various public health-related complaints, such as indoor air quality, noise, sanitation, rodent and cockroach infestations.
  • Enforce the Public Health Act [SBC 2008] c. 28, its regulations and municipal bylaws related to public health matters using various tools widely ranging from education to enforcement including the issuance of warning letters, violation tickets and orders respecting health hazards and contraventions to gain compliance.
  • Provided educational seminars on the regional food safety program to committees in the community.
  • Trained, assessed and mentored more than 20 practicum students in British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) Environmental Health Program.
  • Designed and coordinated mock oral Board of Certification examinations for practicum students since 2007.
  • Developed training materials and an in-depth case study on progressive compliance and investigation skills for practicum students.
  • Spoke as a guest lecturer in the Food Processing courses of the Environmental Health Technology program at
  • Chaired an inter-disciplinary ad-hoc committee to develop educational information and document on the preparation of healthy and safe foods for operators in VCH licensed childcare facilities.

  • Conducted thorough routine inspections including food establishments, meat processing facilities, communal drinking water vehicles and systems.
  • Conducted thorough health impact assessments on a crude oil polluted lake, which supplied drinking water to a native community.
  • Defended the Executive Officer Orders in Alberta Public Health Appeal Board successfully.

  • Administered over 150 FOODSAFE (Level 1) courses to secondary school students, church or event volunteers and food handlers in the Vancouver Lower Mainland.

Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) – BC Branch 

  • Successfully lobbied the Ministry of Health to legislate C.P.H.I.(C) credential in the current BC Public Health Act
  • Collaborated with regional directors of BC health authorities and the Executive Director of the Ministry of Health to address educational needs of the EHOs in web-based educational platform.
  • Successfully created and co-chaired two virtual educational seminar series for over 300 Environmental Public Health Professionals in BC and Canada.
  • Tightened the relationship with the faculty members in BCIT’s Environmental Health program by collaborating a health promotion course for the second-year students.
  • Spoke as a guest lecturer in the Health Promotion, Human Relations and Introduction to Environmental Health courses of the BCIT’s Environmental Health program since 2011.
