It has been a long time since I have enrolled into a credited course, and certainly has been a challenging writing journey. \u00a0In the most recent writing assignment, I was asked to choose\u00a0a complex term and to define it using the methods outlined in the textbook. \u00a0I picked the term “Methemoglobinemia’ – a medical condition which babies can appear blue if they have consumed food or water that is contaminated\u00a0with nitrates. \u00a0This is a term I learnt 12 years ago when I was studying at BCIT and I have not encountered a case in\u00a0my 12-year Environmental Health Officer career. \u00a0When I revisited this term\u00a0at the beginning of the week, I had a good idea how I wanted to write the definition and what information I needed to include in the writing. \u00a0There were a few challenges I faced during the writing process:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. the limited diagrams I could find on\u00a0the Internet that could\u00a0properly illustrate the concept I wanted to discuss,<\/li>\n
  2. whether\u00a0the conveyed\u00a0information\u00a0would create confusions to my target audience, and<\/li>\n
  3. whether\u00a0I made serious grammatical errors which would affect the quality of this assignment.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I appreciate how this course is designed which allows my peers to critique my writing skill and point out areas where need to be corrected. \u00a0Evidently, my peer reviewer, Diana Choi, identified some missing\u00a0articles, which is\u00a0one of\u00a0my usual grammatical\u00a0mistakes that has been\u00a0brought to my attention in other occasions\u00a0(link to the peer review is available\u00a0at the end of this blog). \u00a0In addition, there was a lack of explanation\u00a0on\u00a0a visual (i.e. Figure 1) I used in the assignment, which needed to be further elaborated to reduce confusions. \u00a0I concur with her comments. \u00a0After reviewed my own writing several times, I have decided to remove the first visual as it does not improve the clarity of the definition (finalized document is enclosed in this blog below). \u00a0In addition, I have started editing\u00a0my writing in a methodical manner:<\/p>\n

    1. Sentence structures<\/li>\n
    2. Tenses<\/li>\n
    3. Prepositions<\/li>\n
    4. Articles<\/li>\n
    5. Punctuation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      I understand that this process is time-consuming; and my writing is not perfect in this assignment. \u00a0However, from Diana’s review, I have made a good progress by developing a straightforward description of the term “methemoglobinemia”. \u00a0I am confident that by continue practicing self-editing and reflections, my English writing skill will be improved. \u00a0I look forward to the upcoming assignments, peer reviews and the reflections of my writing style for\u00a0the remaining of the course.<\/p>\n
