Best Works

Welcome to my BEST WORKS page!

This page includes examples of my best work this semester with the purpose and success of each assignment.

  1. Revised Definition Assignment

Purpose:

  • Understand the importance of term definitions in technical writing and professional life
  • Differentiate between parenthetical, sentence, and expand definitions
  • Make proper use of each according to the situation

Success:

I chose to explain “Direct Air Capture” to investors who care about climate change. And I find that correctly labelled visuals are essential tools when explaining a complex term to non-technical readers.

2. Revised Peer Review of the Definition Assignment

Purpose:

  • Learn writing techniques and strategies from partner
  • Offer positive feedback and constructive suggestion for partner

Success:

I partnered with Carol on this assignment and learned the definition of “Solar Photovoltaic panel”. I provided advice on content and grammar and  received valuable suggestions for the position of visuals and reference.

3. Revised Formal Report Proposal and Progress Report with Surveys

Purpose:

  • Learn writing techniques for formal report proposal
  • Study the process of research
  • The process of brainstorming

Success:

The most impressive part is the process of brainstorming. Following the inspiration of the ‘301-Hand-out-Formal-Report-Topic’, I decided on the community first, UBC. Then, I observed the difference brought by COVID-19 and came to the idea of ‘Enhancing COVID Protection for On-campus Dining at UBC’.

4. Revised Proposal Memo

Purpose:

  • Practice the writing techniques of an email memo

Success:

A perfect email memo provides detailed information on each section of the report.

5. Revised LinkedIn Best practices memo

Purpose:

  • Make full use of LinkedIn as a professional networking site
  • Research and study techniques for professional networking and building an online profile with a resume

Success:

All the networking sites have their own rules, like word limits and design patterns. Follow the guidelines and always think twice before posting. I revised the works cited list in alphabetical and surnames first.

6. Revised Memo to Evan Crisp

Purpose:

  • Learn how to write with “You Attitude.”

Success:

Through giving suggestions to Evan Crisp, I practiced with the core principle – reader-centered.

7. Revised Complaint letter and Response letter

Purpose:

  • Practice the techniques of writing letters
  • Write with “You Attitude”

Success:

An effective business letter archives the purpose set out by the writer, whether to persuade readers or provide information. By writing complaints and response letters, I put myself first into opposite positions (consumer vs customer service) and better understand “You Attitude”.

8. Revised Peer Review of a Formal Report

Purpose:

  • Learn writing techniques and strategies from partner
  • Offer positive feedback and constructive suggestion for partner

Success:

I partnered with Lucy on this assignment. Her report topic is “Feasibility of Placing a Clothing Bin at the UBC Bus Loop”. I learned to use graphs to visualize the survey results more straightforward and provided some constructive advice in terms of format and expressions. From the professor’s feedback, I find that I used several “you” or “your” in my peer review without following “You Attitude”. Therefore, I edit them out in the final version.

9. Revised Formal Report

Purpose:

  • Writing ability improves with continuous revising

Success:

  • Eliminate unnecessary words in abstract
  • Use the alphanumeric system in sections and subsections
  • The number of participants in a survey should be over 65
  • The importance of reference time, especially for the COVID topic
