Work Samples

Throughout the ENGL301 course I took at the University of British Columbia, I completed a few assignments that exemplified some of my best work. Below are a few examples:

  1. Definition assignment: As part of Unit 1, the objective of the definition assignment was to learn how to write to the non-technical reader (a reader who has no previous knowledge on the topic). By writing a parenthetical, sentence, and expanded definition, I was able to differentiate the three types of definitions with different levels of detail. I chose to define “extrapolation” because I am most familiar with that term considering my degree in statistics.
  2. Formal Report Proposal: For this Unit 2 assignment, we were required to create a proposal for a formal report to be completed later in the semester. We were meant to investigate and analyze a problem in society. With my research site at Grindstone Cafe, I analyzed how the coffee shop can increase profits from student customers. The overall topic was difficult to come up with, however once it was developed, the proposal was easy to complete.
  3. Complaint Letter: The purpose of this assignment was to teach us how to speak to an audience in a formal manner and persuade the reader – from both the perspective of a complaining reader and the company receiving the complaint. We had a lot of freedom with this assignment, especially with the complaint letter.
  4. Peer Review of Julianne Keu’s LinkedIn Profile: Since I have had a LinkedIn profile for approximately six years, I felt incredibly comfortable completing a peer review for Julianne’s LinkedIn profile. I provided Julianne with a thorough review, including areas where she needed improvement (ex: adding descriptions and technical programs). Peer reviewing her profile gave me some pointers for my own profile, which was the most beneficial peer review completed in my opinion.
