What is ENGL 301?
ENGL 301 is a dedicated technical writing course offered by UBC. It involves the study of principles of written and online communications in business and professional contexts through the practice of abstracts, proposals, applications, reports, correspondence, and online communication such as email, texts, Web Folios, and networking. Throughout the four terms of the course, students will have opportunities to practice writing strategies and techniques to perfect written communication in a business, professional, or technical context. Students of ENGL 301 will also be heavily invested in communication with each other, specifically through online discussions, peer reviews, and the analysis of technical documents of their peers.
Expectations
As a student entering ENGL 301, I have a few expectations from the offerings of this course:
- Hands-on writing practice for the workplace
- By the end of the course, I expect to have gained enough knowledge and technical skills to be able to write professional and technical documents suitable and not out of place for the professional workplace. In order to achieve that, a lot of hands-on practice writing various types of documents, and with proper guidance, is expected throughout the course.
- Practice with peer-to-peer communication skills
- Communication isn’t much without another to communicate to. In order to build adequate communication, there must be some collaboration between myself and my peers; after all, two heads are better than one, and the second head may bring about another angle on my work. Thus, I expect to be able to improve my own work using the critiques of my peers, as well as learn how to effectively and efficiently provide my own critique to theirs.
- Confidence
- After all that’s said and done, I would like to be able to confidently produce anything written in the work place without the worry of embarrassing myself. And hopefully with the above expectations being
