This is my first degree, as I entered UBC in September 2012 after graduating from Burnaby Mountain Secondary School in Burnaby, BC. I was born in Singapore but my family moved to Vancouver a little more than 10 years ago, which resulted in me spending the majority of my schooling right here in Canada.

When I first entered UBC, I had no idea what I really wanted to study – which led me to take a variety of different courses in my first year ranging from Linguistics, to Psychology, to Economics and eventually Computer Science. The first thing I learnt about Computer Science after taking my first class in it was not simply all about programming and clicking things on the computer like I’d thought before, but more about testing our ability to be versatile and how to work as a team and see the big picture before breaking a problem down into more manageable pieces to solve. What has always fascinated me is the way a complex and functional application can be built simply by people working to piece each part of the application together. It also amazes me how accessible it is – in order to make a simple web application, a person will usually not require much more than their computers, internet access, and the ability to look things up and work with different tools and frameworks available.

With graduation approaching in just a little more than a year, I have been asking myself the questions many soon-to-be grads find themselves asking: “what happens next?” The pursuit of the answer to this question is the main reason that I joined the co-op program, which gives me the opportunity to intern at various companies in different roles to do with my degree. My biggest hope after finishing all my work terms is that I will finally have a clearer picture of the things that I can do with my degree, and hopefully do something that I am passionate about!

Finally, in my spare time, I love spending time with friends and family, playing guitar and piano, and eating spicy food!
