Meet Alex

Hello fellow 470 classmates.  I am a 4th year Human Geography major in my final term here at UBC.  I live in Japan but have returned to Canada for a few months to take care of some business, including graduation.  This course has been of interest as it has cultural undertones and culture is my area of focus in Human Geography.  Living life as an immigrant has opened my eyes not only to a new culture and a new respect for other ways of living but also to some of the challenges.  So far I have found the readings quite challenging as they are full of philosophical and suggestive underlying meanings which require decoding.  The topic of identity is perhaps my favorite to discuss and that has been a major component of this course as well.

Meet Natalie

Hey everyone! I’m a fourth year English literature student, born and raised in Vancouver. Though I am taking this course as a part of my major requirements, I’ve found the aspects of this course discussion the intersection of story and literature to be fascinating, as well as the difficulties surrounding the attempt to define what exactly is Canadian. I’ve found myself enjoying the subjective nature of this course and reading other student’s blogs to see how many opinions there can be on one subject.

Meet Neia

Hey guys! My name is Neia, and like Alex and Natalie, I am also a fourth year student at UBC! I am an English Literature major and a Sociology minor. Despite this being a required course, I have found multiple aspects of it to be immensely captivating– the most prominent of which being what our team is focusing on, which is what it means to be Canadian. Taking into consideration Chamberlain’s, “If This Is Your Land, Where Are Your Stories?”, I think it is imperative to focus on exactly what it means to connect with one’s identity and culture. This is definitely something that I look forward to discovering and analyzing in depth.
