It has come time for us to close out this school term and say our final goodbyes as our work on the project has been completed. On behalf of Graydon, Kylee, and myself (Mackenzie), we would like to take the opportunity to be grateful for this experience as it has truly opened our eyes to more than just the science behind data collection. This project has given raw numbers a purpose and a real world example of how various science and arts backgrounds may be applied in collaboration to create new experiences. Each week we assembled and shared our research, challenged each other with difficult questions and new topics, and inspired each other beyond the scope of any other science course offered at UBC. We are thankful and proud to be some of the students lucky enough to have worked on this project and we hope that it will inspire others to think about the bigger picture and ultimately achieve a better understanding of what is happening around us.
Our collective desire for the final product, Earth Symphony, is to leave the audience with a sense of hope. By using layers of different instruments and techniques, we want to be able to show the complexity of the situation in a very real way, while still leaving room for a positive future. For this reason, we have collected our final datasets with the focus of topics involving policies and renewable resource technologies to convey this feeling of hopefulness for future generations.
Throughout this project we have worked individually and collectively to acquire data regarding a variety of planetary and anthropogenic systems, analysed patterns of change, communicated across disciplines, and created visuals (brochures, pamphlets, and posters) to expand our own understanding of the situation.
We hope you have enjoyed this experience as much as we have, and we can’t wait to hear the final product in April 2020!
