Dear Travis,

I have reviewed your letter of application and I am very interested in working with you in a writing group. You mentioned that you would love to work in a group that write about technology and most of our members have computer science background. Your previous degree in philosophy also makes you a great candidate for our ENGL301 writing team. Philosophy requires deep and critical thinking which I believe will aid as a valuable peer-edit feedback in the group. Furthermore, your experience in debates suggests that you have the ability to communicate concisely and precisely, which are very important in technical writing. It would be great if we can have the opportunity to work together and learn from each other.
The attached document is my letter of application to provide you my background and experiences. Please feel free to contact me at enw.hsu@gmail.com if you have any questions or require further information. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Eric Hsu

Dear Joshua,

I have reviewed your letter of application and I am very interested in working with you in a writing group. Your background in both biogeoscience and computer science really stood out and I think you would be a perfect member for our ENGL301 writing team.
Your past work experience as a salesman and a C# developer suggests that you are responsible and skilled in technical communication. Furthermore, you described yourself as a kinesthetic learner and I agreed with you that the best approach to creating a piece of writing is “just write” along with constant revision. That being said, your ability in proof-reading and editing will be a great asset to our writing group.
The attached document is my letter of application to provide you my background and experiences. Please feel free to contact me at enw.hsu@gmail.com if you have any questions or require further information. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Dear ENGL301 Classmates,

My name is Eric Hsu. I am a UBC alumni returning to do a second degree in Integrates Computer Science (ICS).  My first degree was a Bachelor of Kinesiology in Health Science.

The Integrates Computer Science (ICS) is a second degree program for students who already have their first degree and are looking to expand their knowledge and skills in Computer Science.  I spent five years completing my degree in Kinesiology as I have chosen to work as a kinesiologist at the Metrotown Sports and Orthopedic Physiotherapy Clinic for a semester. During these five years, I learned how to effectively research, analyze journals, and compose my thoughts into well supported scientific papers.  With my experience participating in collaborative research during Kinesiology lab work, I am very comfortable working as a research group/in a group setting.  Years of writing lab reports have enabled me to present research concisely and precisely.  I am confident in my skills of self editing and offering constructive criticism during peer review.

Since I have taken some of the English courses required for the Computer Science program, I have realized that I follow the stricter guidelines of science disciplines based purely on facts and research.  I am aware that there are many different styles of writing and I am willing to take a more fluid approach to writing that can help readers better relate to the material being presented.

Outside school, I am a badminton coach at the Premier Badminton Academy in Richmond.  I work with all age groups and used to communicating effectively in different ways to help with understanding.  Prior to my coaching career, I was a high performance athlete competing at the provincial and national level.  My experiences as an athlete trained me to have good time management, strong work ethics and self-discipline.  With all of my skills and experience, I believe that I will be an strong asset to your writing team.  Thank you for your kind attention and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Eric Hsu
