I really enjoyed working on this assignment because it reminded me of my job working as Kinesiologist at the Metrotown Sport and Orthopedic Physiotherapy. Part of my responsibilities was to explain the mechanisms of an injury to my physiotherapy clients. However, prior to doing this assignment, I did not know that definitions could be categorized into three different types: parenthetical, sentence and expanded definition. This assignment reaffirmed my belief about how important it is to have the ability to use the appropriate explanation when explaining a technical term or jargon to someone unfamiliar with the term. I think being able to generate three levels of definition will be a great help when communicating with people in professional fields, whether it be talking to your client or discussing issues with your colleagues.
The peer review part of the assignment was another eye-opening experience for me as well. As I reviewed my writing team member’s definition assignment, I was surprised by the variety in his writing style and interpretation of the assignment. Even though I have reviewed many peers’ research papers in my previous degree, most of the papers had similar tone and perspective as almost everyone majored in Kinesiology or a related scientific field. Due to the many students of ENGL301 coming from different faculties and academic backgrounds, it was very fun to see different types of approach to an assignment. After peer reviewing, I was able to reflect on my own assignment and identify areas in my assignment that could be improved.
I received some very helpful criticism from my teammate. He reminded me that I should include more in-text citations to support my writing. This assignment has made me more aware of my writing and I hope that I will be able to incorporate what I learned to strengthen my future writing.
