3: 3 “You” Attitude & Draft Formal Report Reflection

Unit 3 of ENGL301 consists of two major topics regarding the “You” attitude and construction of the formal report. I found the “You” attitude writing style very interesting as this was my first exposure to writing techniques used for written communication. When writing emails, I rarely consider writing in a way that would be comfortable for my reader.  The “You” Attitude assignment made me realize that using “I” and “we” to begin sentences is very forceful and changes how the reader perceives the rest of the email.  Two emails containing the same information may be positively or negatively received by the reader based on the writing style. With this in mind, I discovered that many of my seemingly well-thought out sentences are considered offensive by the definitions of “you” attitude writing style. Another valuable tip I learned is to avoid using negative words by replacing them with more neutral and factual words. Additionally, if I am in a situation in which the usage of negative words is unavoidable, selecting euphemisms or the least intense synonyms will be a good idea.

2: 3 Formal Report Proposal & LinkedIn Profile Reflection

Unit Two of ENGL301 consisted of two main topics. The first topic was to create an online profile on LinkedIn and the second was to learn the range of techniques used for constructing a research proposal. LinkedIn is one the most popular social networks used by the professionals in various fields. The online platform establishes a network for professionals to easily communicate with one another. Many employers use LinkedIn as a platform to search for potential candidates while hiring so the selection of content and layout of the profile is crucial. Prior to creating my very first professional LinkedIn profile, I spent a lot of time researching what was essential for a webfolio by searching for common themes and useful tips in existing profiles.  I have noticed that many profiles have a professional looking picture to convey a good first impression. Another common trait was that summaries were short and concise in order to quickly introduce oneself to potential employers.  I also realized that it was very important that search key words should match and describe your fields of interest.  This way, potential employers and other professionals in those fields will be able to easily to locate your profile by using those keywords. I found it much harder to set up my LinkedIn profile than other leisure social network profiles such as Facebook. I had difficulty introducing myself and finding words to entice the reader to continue reading my entire profile.  Additionally, it was hard to maintain the balance of sounding friendly and professional at the same time.

The other main topic of Unit Two was to construct a proposal for my final report.  After choosing a workable topic, I needed to conduct research to understand the current state of the organization, existing problems and come up with solutions for its problems. I have also learned to formulate a set of interview questions to collect specific detail for my report and a survey to collect feedback from a larger population. I really enjoyed being able to peer review my fellow team members.  It was very interesting to see what topics that they chose based on their work experience and backgrounds. Each individual identified different problems and used different approaches to resolve the problem. This exercise really broadened my perspective on how issues can be connected together. The comments that I received from my teammates also helped identify any unconscious biases on my part.  I felt that my proposal became more viable after their critique.  I look forward to more peer review assignments.

1: 3 Definition Assignment & Peer Review Reflection

I really enjoyed working on this assignment because it reminded me of my job working as Kinesiologist at the Metrotown Sport and Orthopedic Physiotherapy.  Part of my responsibilities was to explain the mechanisms of an injury to my physiotherapy clients. However, prior to doing this assignment, I did not know that definitions could be categorized into three different types: parenthetical, sentence and expanded definition. This assignment reaffirmed my belief about how important it is to have the ability to use the appropriate explanation when explaining a technical term or jargon to someone unfamiliar with the term. I think being able to generate three levels of definition will be a great help when communicating with people in professional fields, whether it be talking to your client or discussing issues with your colleagues.

The peer review part of the assignment was another eye-opening experience for me as well. As I reviewed my writing team member’s definition assignment, I was surprised by the variety in his writing style and interpretation of the assignment. Even though I have reviewed many peers’ research papers in my previous degree, most of the papers had similar tone and perspective as almost everyone majored in Kinesiology or a related scientific field. Due to the many students of ENGL301 coming from different faculties and academic backgrounds, it was very fun to see different types of approach to an assignment. After peer reviewing, I was able to reflect on my own assignment and identify areas in my assignment that could be improved.

I received some very helpful criticism from my teammate.  He reminded me that I should include more in-text citations to support my writing.  This assignment has made me more aware of my writing and I hope that I will be able to incorporate what I learned to strengthen my future writing.

Dear Travis,

I have reviewed your letter of application and I am very interested in working with you in a writing group. You mentioned that you would love to work in a group that write about technology and most of our members have computer science background. Your previous degree in philosophy also makes you a great candidate for our ENGL301 writing team. Philosophy requires deep and critical thinking which I believe will aid as a valuable peer-edit feedback in the group. Furthermore, your experience in debates suggests that you have the ability to communicate concisely and precisely, which are very important in technical writing. It would be great if we can have the opportunity to work together and learn from each other.
The attached document is my letter of application to provide you my background and experiences. Please feel free to contact me at enw.hsu@gmail.com if you have any questions or require further information. I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

Dear Joshua,

I have reviewed your letter of application and I am very interested in working with you in a writing group. Your background in both biogeoscience and computer science really stood out and I think you would be a perfect member for our ENGL301 writing team.
Your past work experience as a salesman and a C# developer suggests that you are responsible and skilled in technical communication. Furthermore, you described yourself as a kinesthetic learner and I agreed with you that the best approach to creating a piece of writing is “just write” along with constant revision. That being said, your ability in proof-reading and editing will be a great asset to our writing group.
The attached document is my letter of application to provide you my background and experiences. Please feel free to contact me at enw.hsu@gmail.com if you have any questions or require further information. I look forward to your reply.

Dear ENGL301 Classmates,

My name is Eric Hsu. I am a UBC alumni returning to do a second degree in Integrates Computer Science (ICS).  My first degree was a Bachelor of Kinesiology in Health Science.

The Integrates Computer Science (ICS) is a second degree program for students who already have their first degree and are looking to expand their knowledge and skills in Computer Science.  I spent five years completing my degree in Kinesiology as I have chosen to work as a kinesiologist at the Metrotown Sports and Orthopedic Physiotherapy Clinic for a semester. During these five years, I learned how to effectively research, analyze journals, and compose my thoughts into well supported scientific papers.  With my experience participating in collaborative research during Kinesiology lab work, I am very comfortable working as a research group/in a group setting.  Years of writing lab reports have enabled me to present research concisely and precisely.  I am confident in my skills of self editing and offering constructive criticism during peer review.

Since I have taken some of the English courses required for the Computer Science program, I have realized that I follow the stricter guidelines of science disciplines based purely on facts and research.  I am aware that there are many different styles of writing and I am willing to take a more fluid approach to writing that can help readers better relate to the material being presented.

Outside school, I am a badminton coach at the Premier Badminton Academy in Richmond.  I work with all age groups and used to communicating effectively in different ways to help with understanding.  Prior to my coaching career, I was a high performance athlete competing at the provincial and national level.  My experiences as an athlete trained me to have good time management, strong work ethics and self-discipline.  With all of my skills and experience, I believe that I will be an strong asset to your writing team.  Thank you for your kind attention and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Eric Hsu
