ENGL301

English 301 Technical Writing is an online English course offered at UBC where students learn how to write in professional and technical context. It focuses is on developing the written communication skills in business and professional fields, such as abstracts, proposals, applications and reports. Throughout the course, you will learn to produce professional writings independently, in consultation with the instructor and also collaboratively as a team despite being an online course. You are encouraged to join with other classmates in discussions, activities and peer reviews to improve online communication techniques and self-editing skills.

ENG301 is divided into 4 units:
·        Principles, Practices and People in English 301:
– introduction to the principles of technical and business writing.

·        Designing a Report Proposal; Defining Terms with Audience in Mind:
– the first stage of the formal report project, you will design and submit a report proposal to your writing team.
·        Designing a Report Outline & Draft; Building your Resume and Job Application skills:
– d
raft a formal outline and get feedback from writing team.
·        Drafting the Formal Report; Peer Review and Final Report; developing networking strategies:
– develop a social networking strategy and complete your application assignments.

The will be 3 major writing assignments in this course: the Formal Report, the Application on Linked-in and the Web Folio. Linked-in profile will include accompanying references whereas the professionally designed website will display your resume.

At the end of this course, I expect myself to be able to write efficiently, precisely and most importantly proficiency. I think this course is perfect for students who are in business or other professional fields where the first impression is heavily based on a written resume. I hope that the feedback from online discussion and peer reviews will help me learn and improve my technical writing skills.
