In this post I will be commenting on Kate Phan Vu’s blog, a first-year Sauder School of Business student. On this blog she shares her different views on business-related facts and her general knowledge of this complex subject matter.

The first thing that comes to mind when reading Kate’s blog is its simplicity. The impeccable design and the concise writing make it a real pleasure to read her blog posts.

Secondly, Kate’s work underlines her ability of contemplating different themes on different scales. On her first blog post where she talks about Business Ethics, she describes the abstract concept and the confrontations while providing concrete example in the name of Primark. In her second post, she takes an interest to a local scale matter: Tim Horton’s marketing strategy. Therefore, UBC readers will find a source of interest on this subject. Lastly, in her third post she expands her interest to an international context by describing the world-renown company Adobe’s managerial accounting strategy.

Also, Kate’s blog is very interesting by the fact that she’s able to transpose what she learnt in class to what she writes, and therefore her content becomes much richer. For example, let’s talk about Tim Horton’s marketing strategy. In this article we understand that in different ways including authenticity and diversity, Tim Horton is able to market its product as strongly “Canadian”. In her third blog post, we can see that she has mastered the notion of “managerial accounting” as she explains how Adobe have moved from annual performance reviews to regular “check ins” that have proven to be more efficient on the long-term.

However, we must not limit Kate’s blog to just an illustration of her vast knowledge in business. Kate also manages to share her own point of view, as she did in the business ethics post. In this post she defends the importance of moral values in a society where making profit has become (too much of) a priority, whereas they could brand their company via their moral values.

To conclude, Kate’s blog posts – there are currently 3 of them- are fascinating and offers a real view of how a first-year student would perceive this specific commerce environment. I strongly hope that she will keep on this track, and even try to diversify even more her content by sharing what is in her brilliant mind.
