Hands down my absolute favourite marketers, there have been instances where I have sat down and done nothing but watch Nike commercials on the Internet (see: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lZA-57h64kE\">Take It To The Next Level<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lSggaxXUS8k&amp;feature=fvwrel\">Write the Future<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cdtejCR413c\">Lebron Rise<\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jlXRengzZoc\">Fate<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=45mMioJ5szc\">Failure<\/a>) \u2013 a reward on Nike\u2019s part that they have worked long and hard for.<\/p>\n<p>Long story short, what was formally Blue Ribbon Sports debuted as Nike in 1972 during the Munich Olympic trials, and their first real foray into the world of marketing would come with the company\u2019s sponsorship of prominent, and flamboyant, runner Steve Prefontaine. There\u2019s no debate that the signing of Prefontaine, at one point the most popular athlete in Oregon and a revered runner, was big news for Nike. His tragic death in a 1975 car accident would be a big blow for Nike, but luckily, its true prodigal son would be coming.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_102\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/enzowoo\/files\/2012\/01\/Steve-Prefontaine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-102\" title=\"Steve Prefontaine\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/enzowoo\/files\/2012\/01\/Steve-Prefontaine-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/enzowoo\/files\/2012\/01\/Steve-Prefontaine-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/enzowoo\/files\/2012\/01\/Steve-Prefontaine.jpg 407w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-102\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A legendary runner and a huge first step for Nike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 1980s would be an extraordinary decade for Nike, with one of their most important marketing decisions ever to come in the 1984 decision to bring aboard a 21 year old talent named Michael Jordan \u2013 a prodigal basketball talent from the University of North Carolina. He would begin the marketing rise for Nike into uncharted territory, and to this day, the company&#8217;s\u00a0unparalleled\u00a0and\u00a0amazing array of star-filled advertisements continue to dazzle the industry and the public. The first model of his signature shoe, the\u00a0<a title=\"Air Jordan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Air_Jordan\">Air Jordan<\/a>, originally is banned by the\u00a0<a title=\"National Basketball Association\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Basketball_Association\">NBA<\/a>, drawing a tremendous amount of publicity<\/p>\n<p>1987<\/p>\n<p>*The\u00a0<a title=\"Nike Air Max\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nike_Air_Max\">Nike Air Max<\/a>\u00a0shoe is introduced, which for the first time makes visible the Nike air bag.<\/p>\n<p>A television ad featuring the\u00a0<a title=\"Beatles\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beatles\">Beatles<\/a>&#8216; song &#8220;Revolution&#8221; is the first time that a song performed by the Beatles is used in a TV ad.<\/p>\n<p>1988<\/p>\n<p>*The famous tagline, &#8220;Just do it&#8221;, is introduced at the suggestion of 4th grader Tiffeny Speir from Urban Park Elementary School in Dallas, TX.<\/p>\n<p>1994<\/p>\n<p>*Nike wins Advertiser of the Year at the\u00a0<a title=\"Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cannes_Lions_International_Advertising_Festival\">Cannes Advertising Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>1996<\/p>\n<p>*Nike signs\u00a0<a title=\"Tiger Woods\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tiger_Woods\">Tiger Woods<\/a>\u00a0soon after he gives up his amateur golf status.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although this topic is partially covered in my previous blog post, being the sports nut that I am, I figured that Nike deserved a little more attention from my part.
