Hazard type: ls

Short Description: debris flow mitigation

Long Description: In 1956, a significant rainfall event caused a large flood on Mosquito Creek. Because insufficient hazard zoning regulations allowed residential development on the floodplain of the river, multiple houses were destroyed and others were severely impacted. To mitigate this hazard, the District of North Vancouver paid the equivalent of $16 million to move this stretch of Mosquito Creek into an underground box culvert. The new channel was a rip rap lining and railway tie fencing to slow the movement of woody debris. The vegetation and coarse material has since started to fill in around these fences reducing their ability to slow down debris flow motion.
