English 301 is an online- based technical writing course with the purpose of teaching students how to communicate in both written and online situations in a professional context. Throughout the course I have learned to prepare various technical documents such as project proposals, memorandums, applications and formal reports. I have also learned the basics of online communication with colleagues through email and social media. This course has pulled ideas from all aspects of professional communication to give me the skills that I need to communicate in the workplace and prepare necessary professional documents.
The course is broken down into 4 units with 3 lessons each, one per week of class. The first unit focused on meeting our classmates by organizing ourselves into writing teams of four. It also focused on the important aspects of business correspondence such as tone, audience, clarity and presentation. Unit 2 focused on submitting a formal report proposal and working with our writing team to peer review these proposals. We also created LinkedIn profiles as a means for social media networking. In unit 3 we focused on application package building and the completion of the first draft of our formal reports. In the 4th and final unit we completed this Web Folio and the final draft of our formal reports. For further information about this course you can visit the course website: English 301
I have learned a lot of valuable skills through the assignments completed in this course. The peer review process has allowed me to gain new insight into my writing by allowing a colleague’s constructive criticism to better my ability to look at my work objectively.
