I am a geology student in my third year of study at UBC. The majority of my courses are rock related and cover topics such as structural geology, sedimentology and geochemistry. These courses teach young student geologists the basics for pursuing their professional career in industry later in life. Our labs and field opportunities give us valuable hands-on experience that will be relevant to start our careers. Geology covers a wide range of industries and what I would like do for a career is left quite open ended by my degree. Outside of my core courses I have studied introductory German, Psychology and English.
Academically I am interested in geology as my field of study indicates. More specifically I am interested in mining exploration and the process of mining resources. Pursuing a degree in geology allows me to take courses such as mineral deposits and structural geology which are relevant to my academic interests and build on the skills needed to work in the mining industry.
After I graduate with my degree in geology I plan to pursue a career in mining exploration. Mining exploration deals with a variety of different resources and operates in all corners of the globe. I would like to build on my field experience and expand my knowledge of mining in the early stages of my career and work towards becoming a higher level geologist. A mining exploration geologist can work a wide range of jobs from prospecting to drill hole location planning. Working as a field geologist will allow me to spend lots of time in the outdoors and keep active rather than sitting in a cubicle form 9-5.
