Burger King Deal With Tim Hortons May Be Disastrous For Rainforest’s

After reading Brodie McLaughlin’s blog post on the environmental concerns on Burger King’s takeover of Tim Hortons, I became very interested in the subject and began to read further into the subject.

Palm oil is used in everything from food and fuel to beauty products and cleaning agents. Dramatic increases in demand for palm oil are driving increases in deforestation, and currently, about ten percent of all global warming emissions result from deforestation. Both Burger King and Tim Hortons currently have a bad track record with palm oil, however, it hadn’t seem to be a huge issue until both of these companies had decided the merge with one another.

I found this very interesting because as soon as the Canadian company is about to be taken over by a large American company, a lot of people have been complaining about the use of palm oil, when in recent years this did not seem like an issue. From a consumers point of view, ultimately, regardless with the use of palm oil or not, I do not believe that this would be able to stop both companies from selling their products as the consumers will buy their products regardless of which oil they use. This may affect some people with certain beliefs, however, in the long term, this will not make a huge impact.
