strike1Kelowna Regional Transit bus drivers have been on strike since Thursday, Nov 10. The strike has impacted a large number of Okanagan campus students, staff and faculty who rely on the service for transportation.

At this point the two sides are not close to reaching any agreement. There has been a noticeable increase in the amount of vehicle traffic to and from campus, leading to lineups along highway 97.

strike2In an attempt to accommodate the increase in traffic, Parking Services has opened up some overflow parking areas. People who have purchased transit passes may claim a partial refund from City Hall once the strike is over.

Anyone seeking or willing to offer rides to UBC Okanagan is encouraged to sign up with carpool.ca. Alternately, the UBCO car club facebook group has begun organizing rides for students without cars, UBCO Ride Share. A number of people have posted in the classified ads on castanet offering or looking for rides. Students are advised to contact their instructors if they are unable to strike3attend classes or mid-term exams. Faculty and staff unable to travel to the university during the service disruption, should speak to their unit head, supervisor or manager about alternative transportation or work arrangements where possible.

Supervisors, managers, and unit heads are asked to exercise flexibility as feasible within the operational needs of their work unit. Hopefully the transit strike will end soon.
