Are you interested in making a difference but don’t know how and don’t have time to spare outside of work hours?

Would you like to learn something new but don’t know what to take on yet?

Are you a curious problem solver that has loads of secret ideas and no place for them?

Do you sometimes have this niggling feeling that there’s a better way to support students in your day to day job?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions the new ES Equity Committee could be a great place for you!

The goal of the Committee is to support the access and success of underrepresented and/or marginalized students at UBC. In order to do this we need a wide variety of perspectives on the issues students face at UBC, and a network of folks across ES who are keen to tackle the issues. Knowledge in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is not required but an interest and willingness to learn is. In-depth training will be provided on EDI, and how to become an effective change agent. This is a welcoming space for everyone.

What will you be doing?
• Provide your input and ideas in regards to embedding EDI in the systems, operations and practices of ES
• Provide input and feedback for ES EDI training material
• Pilot training first as a cohort and serve as co-facilitators for EDI training
• Add qualitative and staff experience to quantitative student results
• Embed equity, diversity and inclusion in the new performance development framework
• Act as ambassadors by disseminating research, information and discussions from the Committee to their home unit

What does this mean in terms of your time?
• A two hour initial training session will be scheduled to get us on the same page and additional training workshops may be scheduled throughout.
• There will be a one hour monthly meeting with the main group.
• Working groups will be set up around particular projects that may require additional hours.

If you have questions or would like to express your interest in joining please email Zenia Ferreira, SDI Planning & Evaluation Strategist (Zenia.Ferreira@ubc.ca) by March 31st. After receiving all expressions of interest, we will be working with your manager to select representatives from each unit and will provide information on how you can stay involved outside of the committee.
