{"id":8974,"date":"2021-09-29T06:46:36","date_gmt":"2021-09-29T13:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/esnews\/?p=8974"},"modified":"2021-09-29T10:30:06","modified_gmt":"2021-09-29T17:30:06","slug":"beyond-tomorrow-scholars-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/esnews\/beyond-tomorrow-scholars-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Posted on behalf of Nicolette Richardson<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I am excited to be working with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beyondtomorrow.ubc.ca\/about-the-program\/\">Beyond Tomorrow Scholars\u00a0Program<\/a>\u00a0team. The Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Award is the newest addition to our major entrance scholarships. This award \u2013 which also features wrap-around supports\u00a0and programming\u00a0for scholars \u2013 targets\u00a0students\u00a0who self-identify as Black and are\u00a0transitioning to UBC from a secondary or post-secondary institution to complete an undergraduate degree\u00a0in any UBC faculty.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to the Centennial Scholars Entrance Award,\u00a0this is a needs-based award. While students need to be academically ready (and meet UBC\u2019s admission requirements), the purpose of the award is to provide renewable\u00a0funding\u00a0of up to $80,000 over a 4-year period to students who are academically qualified but would not be able to attend without financial assistance.<\/p>\n<p>The Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program has four goals:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Create<\/strong>\u202fa positive cohort-based scholar experience that is supported through an integral network of cross-campus support.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Foster<\/strong>\u202fa sense of belonging, joy, and meaningful connections amongst Scholars and the overarching Black student community at UBC.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empower<\/strong>\u202fScholars to be co-creators of their academic and leadership experience at UBC through formal opportunities while leaving room for self-directed goals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Celebrate<\/strong>\u202fScholars\u2019 successes as active participants in community-engagement learning and action during and after university.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While the program offerings and further wrap-around supports are designed to ensure the success of the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars at UBC,\u00a0select\u00a0offerings will\u00a0also\u00a0be\u00a0open to the wider UBC community.\u00a0Building community amongst all\u202fBlack students at the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses\u00a0is an\u00a0important goal of the program\u00a0and part of my role will be to create excitement for prospective Black students to see themselves at UBC and\u00a0the success they can achieve here and beyond their university career.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"post-excerpt\">Posted on behalf of Nicolette Richardson I am excited to be working with the\u00a0Beyond Tomorrow Scholars\u00a0Program\u00a0team.
