Stefan Constantinescu, Quartz<\/em><\/a>, January 7, 2014–Three gunmen\u00a0stormed the offices<\/a>\u00a0of a French satirical magazine called Charlie Hebdo around lunchtime on Wednesday (Jan. 7), brandishing AK-47s and a rocket launcher. The assailants killed 12 people and wounded five others. Among those dead are the magazine\u2019s publisher, St\u00e9phane Charbonnier; three cartoonists: Jean Cabut, Georges Wolinski, and Bernard Verlhac; and writer and economist Bernard Maris. G\u00e9rard Biard, the magazine\u2019s editor-in-chief, was in London at the time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bernard Cazeneuve, the country\u2019s interior minister, says the country is now on high alert and that his main goal is \u201cto neutralize these three criminals who have committed this barbaric act\u201d. President Fran\u00e7ois Hollande has condemned the attacks, calling them \u201can exceptional act of barbarism\u201d, and that France needs to \u201cshow we are a united country\u201d by being \u201cfirm and strong\u201d. German chancellor Angela Merkel echoed similar sentiments, saying today was an \u201cattack on freedom of speech and the press, core elements of our free democratic culture. In no way can this be justified.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Charlie Hebdo is no stranger to controversy. The magazine,\u00a0started in 1969<\/a>, drew ire\u00a0in 2006<\/a>\u00a0(link in French)\u00a0for republishing cartoons of the prophet Mohammed that had appeared previously in Norways Jyllands-Posten. In 2011\u00a0it was firebombed<\/a>\u00a0(paywall) after publishing a issue purportedly \u201cguest edited\u201d by\u00a0the\u00a0prophet and entitled \u201cSharia Hebdo.\u201d One year later it\u00a0published more cartoons<\/a>, prompting France to close embassies and schools\u00a0in 20 different countries<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
