Welcome! This blog will serve as a framing tool for the discussion that will occur as part of our learning for this module of ETEC511, Foundations of Learning Technology. We expect (and encourage) spillover between the discussion occurring in Connect and this space. Our team is made up of Shelley Pike, Mariana Reinoso, Alex Monegro, and Ross Fraser.

Our plan for the module is as follows:

  1. Read and comment on our summaries of the reading – We will summarize the readings, including key concepts from it; We will use multimedia to make the experience richer for you; We would like you to read our summaries, and share your thoughts on our efforts with us on this blog.
  2. Participate in our problem solving activity – We have written a mini-case where we challenge you to think about how we can use better engage learners by considering anthropological and sociological dimensions, and leveraging education technology.
  3. Comment on Connect – We will be posing questions in order to explore different aspects on the learning module, we encourage to actively participate.
  4. Join for our live classroom session – Join us on Thursday Oct. 4th for a live discussion of how anthropology, and sociology impact educational technology.

For your reference, we’ve included below the reading list for the learning module, as well as the focus questions suggested by our learning facilitator, Matiul Alam.

Readings / Media:

Focus Questions:

What is the anthropology of educational technology? Even though the anthropology of technology cannot be reduced to multiculturalism, what is multicultural educational technology? And even though anthropology is never circumscribed by cultural studies, what do cultural studies of educational technology look like?

What is culture?

Is all educational technology culture? In what ways is educational technology culture? Is an ethnography of educational technology automatically an anthropology of educational technology?

If there are educational cultures, are there educational-technological cultures? How might we explore and shape these cultures as professional educational technologists?

What is the unit of analysis for educational technology?  “Can educational technology serve as a catalyst for the general improvement of students’ experiences” (Kerr, 2004, p. 134)?  Is the unit of analysis learning & outcomes or is it the work that is done in schools, other institutions, and the informal edutainment and educational sector?
