{"id":1177,"date":"2009-11-09T20:19:32","date_gmt":"2009-11-10T04:19:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec521\/?p=1177"},"modified":"2010-11-27T13:34:20","modified_gmt":"2010-11-27T21:34:20","slug":"aboriginal-research-ethics-initiative-m3-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec521\/2009\/11\/09\/aboriginal-research-ethics-initiative-m3-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Aboriginal Research Ethics Initiative (M3-3)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spawned by our discussion about questions to consider before researching in Aboriginal communities I started digging around for more information about Aboriginal research.<\/p>\n<p>One site that turned out to be quite relevant is the Government of Canada&#8217;s Panel on Research Ethics (PRE) and more specifically their article on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pre.ethics.gc.ca\/eng\/policy-politique\/initiatives\/reports-rapports\/arei-iera\/\">Aboriginal Research Ethics Initiative<\/a> (AREI).\u00a0 The site outlines the following framework for research involving Aboriginal Peoples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a commitment to building on local, national and international  initiatives<\/li>\n<li>engagement of and partnership with the community<\/li>\n<li>application of\u00a0  \t    PRE&#8217;s First Principles to this initiative<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These general guidelines provide a great basis for research in this field and the following reseources provided by the site offer a deeper look into the Ethics of such research:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pre.ethics.gc.ca\/eng\/resources-ressources\/news-nouvelles\/nr-cp\/2009-08-26_AREI\/\">Update on PRE&#8217;s Aboriginal Research Ethics Initiative (AREI)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Draft 2nd edition TCPS Chapter 9 Research Involving Aboriginal Peoples\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pre.ethics.gc.ca\/eng\/policy-politique\/initiatives\/draft-preliminaire\/chapter9-chapitre9\/\">Draft 2nd edition TCPS Chapter 9 Research Involving Aboriginal Peoples<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pre.ethics.gc.ca\/eng\/policy-politique\/initiatives\/reports-rapports\/riap-rapa\/\">Research Involving Aboriginal Peoples in the TCPS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyone actively involved with research in Aboriginal Communities should definately consider visiting this site as there is a lot of great information for researchers.\u00a0 For example here is a quick list of guidelines from the Research Involving Aboriginal Peoples in the TCPS:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>B. Good Practices<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Researchers and REBs involved  with Aboriginal communities should consider the following &#8220;good  practices,&#8221; which have been drawn from the documents referred to above: <\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><em> To respect the culture, traditions  and knowledge of the Aboriginal group;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> To conceptualize and conduct  research with Aboriginal group as a partnership;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> To consult members of the group who  have relevant expertise;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> To involve the group in the design  of the project;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> To examine how the research may be  shaped to address the needs and concerns of the group;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> To make best efforts to ensure that  the emphasis of the research, and the ways chosen to conduct it,  respect the many viewpoints of different segments of the group in  question;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> To provide the group with  information respecting the following:<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li> Protection of the Aboriginal  group&#8217;s cultural estate and other property;<\/li>\n<li> The availability of a  preliminary report for comment;<\/li>\n<li> The potential employment by  researchers of members of the community appropriate and without  prejudice;<\/li>\n<li> Researchers&#8217; willingness to  cooperate with community institutions;<\/li>\n<li> Researchers&#8217; willingness to  deposit data, working papers and related materials in an agreed-upon  repository.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>To acknowledge in the publication of  the research results the various viewpoints of the community on the  topics researched; and <\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> To afford the community an  opportunity to react and respond to the research findings before the  completion of the final report, in the final report or even in all  relevant publications (see Section 2 on information disclosure). <\/em><em>Aboriginal Peoples may wish to  react to research findings. It is inappropriate for researchers to  dismiss matters of disagreement with the group without giving such  matters due consideration.
