{"id":1851,"date":"2012-10-12T19:18:08","date_gmt":"2012-10-13T02:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec521sept12\/?p=1851"},"modified":"2012-10-12T19:20:11","modified_gmt":"2012-10-13T02:20:11","slug":"the-effect-of-stereotyping-on-young-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec521sept12\/2012\/10\/12\/the-effect-of-stereotyping-on-young-people\/","title":{"rendered":"The effect of stereotyping on young people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Growing up watching and playing &#8220;cowboys and indians&#8221; must have an effect on aboriginal youth.\u00a0 The stereotypes that we are learning about most certainly must affect youth profoundly.<\/p>\n<p>The following article identifies some indigenous stereotypes in video games &#8211; depicting indigenous as someone to shoot for points, or as a half-breed hero protecting his people.\u00a0 Furthermore, in the news or on tv indigenous people are often shown in a negative light.<\/p>\n<p>This must contribute to a lack of self-esteem and identity.\u00a0 According to this article, they often feel &#8220;invisible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>When do aboriginal youth or children see themselves as human beings?\u00a0\u00a0 Shouldn&#8217;t this become a priority in order to maintain a healthy society?\u00a0\u00a0 I can appreciate the efforts of the APTN, but I believe this should become more mainstream.\u00a0 As I mentioned in a previous post &#8211; we need to merge approaches in all sorts of media to challenge stereotypes and biases.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/diversity-media\/aboriginal-people\/impact-stereotyping-young-people\">http:\/\/mediasmarts.ca\/diversity-media\/aboriginal-people\/impact-stereotyping-young-people<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Growing up watching and playing &#8220;cowboys and indians&#8221; must have an effect on aboriginal youth.\u00a0 The stereotypes that we are learning about most certainly must affect youth profoundly.
