{"id":2021,"date":"2012-10-23T21:00:10","date_gmt":"2012-10-24T04:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec521sept12\/?p=2021"},"modified":"2012-10-23T21:00:10","modified_gmt":"2012-10-24T04:00:10","slug":"decolonizing-methodologies-and-indigenous-knowledge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec521sept12\/2012\/10\/23\/decolonizing-methodologies-and-indigenous-knowledge\/","title":{"rendered":"Decolonizing Methodologies and Indigenous Knowledge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The full name of the paper is Decolonizing Methodologies and Indigenous Knowledge: The Role of Culture, Place and Personal Experience in Professional Development.\u00a0 The pdf can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec521sept12\/files\/2012\/10\/Decolonizing.pdf\">here.<\/a>\u00a0 The paper discusses the attitudes of teachers to including Indigenous knowledge in their curriculum before and after a presentation on indigenous Hawai&#8217;ian science topics.<\/p>\n<p>The paper was very hopeful, indicating that it is possible to change teachers&#8217; attitudes towards including Indigenous knowledge.\u00a0 What was even more interesting, was that the researcher cited Linda Smith&#8217;s (1999) book on Decolonizing Methodologies.\u00a0 The author states that, &#8220;Linda Smith (1999), a Maori researcher, describes 25 decolonizing research projects to recover marginalized cultural knowledge, practices, and identity.&#8221; (Chinn, 2007; p. 1252).\u00a0 Chinn (2007) then identifies five of these decolonizing methods that she used in the research.\u00a0 A very interesting article and study on a variety of levels, and one that ties in math, science and Module 3&#8217;s theme of decolonization.<\/p>\n<p>Reference:<\/p>\n<p>Chinn, P.
