Mary Hui – Introduction

Hi everyone,

Nice to meet you! I’m also happy to see some familiar faces here!

My name is Mary and I am from Vancouver BC. During my spare time I enjoy exercising, cooking and watching playthroughs on youtube.
ETEC 522 is my 4th/5th course. The other course I am taking is ETEC 524. Time sure is flying by.
I am not a teacher but I have always been interested in teaching. I work as a Systems Analyst in the healthcare industry and have been helping with a lot of education guidelines/procedures for the medical staff.

Through my ETEC journey I’ve learned about the different pedagogies including behaviourism, constructivism, gamification, etc. It would be interesting to see how we can implement this include this knowledge and create my own “venture”. It is a new feeling to label myself as an “entrepreneur” since I have no background in creating something out of nothing. However, it will be a useful stepping stone to a higher level of thinking and I think taking this course will help me in achieving this goal

Looking forward to working with everyone!

Hi Mary, I don’t have a teaching background so much either. What is your area of interest, if you don’t mind me asking?

      Hi Hayley,
Very nice to meet you! That’s a very good question. I’ve always wanted to start my own design teaching/consulting presence online. I am hoping I can get some insight on how I can do this through this course, at least have a starting point :). How about you? what is your area of interest?

Hi Mary! Nice to meet you – I’m so curious what kind of design teaching/consulting you want to do – of course I need to butt in since I work in the design industry 🙂

          Hi Ally,
It’s very nice to meet you as well! So great to see a fellow designer in this class! My background is in User experience / Interface Design. So I designed menus for games, apps, and other software out there 🙂 I am still looking to see what types of design I would like to pursue in the future.

How about you? What types of design do you wish to do? What has been the most memorable experience for you so far in the design industry?

    Hi Mary,
Nice to meet you and the meme! What kind of playthroughs do you enjoy?
The word entrepreneur also seems daunting to me but I think our definition of what that means may change as we go further in the course. Who knows!

      Hi Jackson.
Nice to e-meet you! and so glad you like the meme 🙂 I used to love watching Pewdiepie, jacksepticeye and markiplier on youtube. There were some games that were too scary to play by myself, so I rather watch other people play online. Recently during the pandemic, I really like watching Disguided Toast and Valkyrae – I really like the collaborative aspect of gaming 🙂 How about you? do you also watch playthroughs?

I hear you about the definition of “entrepreneur”. I feel the same way for now as well. What an exciting opportunity to see how our perspective will evolve throughout the term!

        Surprise!
I also watch all those YouTubers. I have followed the OfflineTV group a bit but not as much! Looking forward to working with you!

It is great to meet you, Mary! I feel the same way about thinking of myself as an entrepreneur. Like you, I think this course is going to offer that next step for us. Whether we take it or not is up to us!

      Hi Nathan,
It is very nice to meet you as well. I agree with what you said about entrepreneurship and how we all have the responsibility to find answer even when it may be difficult. Looking forward to collaborating with you in the semester!
