Introduction from Mr. Adam (Turpy) Turpin

Good morning everyone! As you have seen, my name is Adam Turpin, but I do go by the nickname “Turpy”. A small piece of my personal history: I am a graduate of Capilano University with my Bachelor of Music Transfer Diploma (2008), UBC with my Bachelor of Music Degree (2013) and UBC with my Bachelor of Education Degree (2014). I have been teaching music in the public system since graduating, and I am currently in my 7th year of teaching elementary music at Kitchener Elementary School in Burnaby, BC. What I often tell people about my job: it stresses me, it exhausts me, I lose a ton of sleep, and I WOULDN’T rather do anything else. I graduated with my Bachelor of Music having learned a variety of different instruments. Some I play well, others… not so well. My main instrument is voice.

Outside of music and teaching, I do have many other passions and interests in life. These include cycling, creative writing, almost anything to do with any form of sports (not a great athlete, but I love watching, all sports interest me with hockey and NFL football being my favourites, with my favourite teams being the Vancouver Canucks and the Los Angeles Chargers), playing video games (recreationally, I love my vintage games, although I’m not great at video games), anything to do with Disney (specificially theme parks, Disneyland is my favourite vacation destination in the world), and on top of all of that, I have an embarrassingly huge Lego collection for someone my age.

This is my second term in the Masters of Educational Technology Program. I completed ETEC 500 last term, and I am currently this course alongside ETEC 544. I am excited to learn so many new aspects, elements, and techniques of technology in education that I want to implement in my classroom. I am extremely excited to work with each of you and learning more about you.

    Thanks for your introduction Adam.

I have music as part of my teaching package this year and although I am trying hard to deliver a quality program (and some classes just barely surviving), I really hope our board makes a push to keep music a specialist subject for passionate and knowledgeable educators like yourself.

As a side note, not a hockey/NFL player, but Myles Turner is an NBA player who is very open about his passion for building with LEGOs. I am attaching a little article about him should you be interested in the sport/LEGO crossover. (https://www.slamonline.com/the-magazine/true-story-myles-turner-legos/)
