Venture Overview: Sora Schools
Sora Schools is an accredited virtual, project-based high school that replaces traditional school settings with personalized, interdisciplinary learning. Students design their own paths and master core subjects through projects they undertake. The original value proposition here is that it provides an alternative to students being stifled by conventional public education. By leveraging an online platform, it scales a flexible, interest-driven pedagogy that usually benefits private schools to a much broader demographic.
Entrepreneurial Analysis
Garret champions his innovation based on his own lived experience with rigid school systems. He dropped out of Georgia Tech Computer Science, started a charity at age 13. He and his co-founders recognized their own limitations in academia and hired expert educators to run the curriculum while they focused on growth. He is backed by nearly $30M from the likes of Union Square Ventures and has assembled a highly credible team and advisory board.
Personal Reflection
The thing that struck me most about Garret’s approach was his foresight to recognize his own short-comings and to bring other experts into the fold to cover them off. That, to me, symbolizes true leadership that puts innovation and progress before ego. It fits my preferred style of leadership that leverages the expertise and diversity of a large team rather than assuming one person needs to be the know-it-all that directs all movement.
I like that Garrett Smiley is willing to recognize his own limitations and build a team with expertise beyond his own. Bringing experienced educators into the organization demonstrates an understanding that educational innovation requires both strong ideas and understanding of pedagogy.
I was also interested in the venture’s focus on personalized and project-based learning. However, while I do wonder if this model can scale broadly, I do think Garret demonstrates several characteristics associated with successful entrepreneurs – identify a meaningful problem, challenge existing systems, and build a team capable of turning vision into reality.
