Luis von Ahn is a Guatemalan-American developer and entrepreneur who founded reCAPTCHA and DuoLingo.

After growing up in Guatemala City, von Ahn applied to colleges in the United States and received a Bachelor of Science in 2000 from Duke University and his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in the mid-2000’s.

In the early 2000’s, von Ahn worked with Manuel Blum on CAPTCHAs, which are the computer-generated tests that are used even today to confirm a user is human and not a bot.

Later in 2009, von Ahn worked with his graduate student Severin Hacker to begin developing the language education platform, Duolingo. After developing for three years, Duolingo was launched in 2012.

Von Ahn still owns a significant portion of Duolingo and continues to serve as the company’s CEO.
