Looking Beyond the Scores: An Educational Venture Analysis of MathMap
For my Educational Venture Analyst (EVA) report, I chose to analyze MathMap, an Alberta-developed assessment platform designed to help teachers identify the mathematical misconceptions behind students’ errors. As a junior high mathematics and Learning Support teacher, I was immediately interested in this venture because it closely aligns with the work I do every day.
I chose to analyze MathMap because I have seen it used within my own school division. That experience allowed me to look beyond the promotional materials and reflect on the product from the perspectives of a mathematics teacher, a Learning Support teacher, and an instructional coach. Rather than asking only whether MathMap helps students learn, this assignment challenged me to evaluate it as an Educational Venture Analyst by considering its market need, competitive position, scalability, sustainability, and long-term potential.
What stood out to me most was that successful educational ventures require much more than a good idea. My analysis reinforced that teacher buy-in, professional learning, and thoughtful implementation can be just as important as the product itself and may ultimately determine whether it succeeds. I was particularly drawn to MathMap because of its focus on identifying misconceptions. In my experience, recognizing that a student is struggling is only the first step. Understanding why they are struggling is what leads to meaningful intervention and more informed instructional decisions.
Based on my analysis, I would recommend investing in MathMap, provided it continues to build evidence of its long-term effectiveness and supports schools with strong implementation practices as it expands.
