Imagine you’ve got years of professional experience, but you freeze up in a job interview…not because you can’t do the work, but because English isn’t your first language. That’s the reality for a lot of newcomers to Canada, and it’s exactly the problem InStage ESL was built to solve. It’s the first AI interview platform that adapts to a learner’s Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level, giving people a safe place to practice before the real thing.
Here’s how it works: you pick your level, anywhere from CLB 4 to 12, and the AI adjusts everything to match (the vocabulary, the pace, the complexity, even the follow-up questions). So a beginner might get “Tell me about yourself,” while an advanced speaker gets asked to walk through a tough project and how they juggled competing priorities. Same interview, different language level. Along the way, you get real feedback on your pronunciation, grammar, and fluency, plus a clear sense of how close you are to reaching the next CLB level. Teachers get in on it too, with dashboards that show how their learners are progressing.
The best part? Nobody else is doing this. Plenty of apps teach English, and plenty of tools help with interview prep, but InStage ESL is the only one that brings AI interviews, CLB progression, workplace English, and Canadian settlement together in one place. We’re looking for $1.3 million in seed funding to make it happen and help newcomers turn their language practice into the confidence they need to land the job.
I hope you enjoy our 1-minute video introduction and presentation.
Hi Edith,
Here is my FEEDBACK:
Great job on your Venture Pitch and Elevator Pitch! You created a very similar venture pitch to mine – BridgeVoiceAI, so it was cool to compare and see the differences.
I wasn’t familiar with InStage, so I had to do some further research on it- I appreciate the upgrades you’ve added to InStageESL. What stands out to me about your VP is that your platform adapts to the individuals CLB level as these are Canadian Immigrant language benchmarks and your target market is Canadian immigrants. People will likely be coming in with varying language proficiencies
I would have appreciated to see some academic research or government statistics from Statistics Canada to support your claims on the importance of additions you will make to InStage, as I did not see any.
I was wondering if this could be scalable to other countries, would you expand internationally, or would Canada be your main focus for now? I could see it expanding, and I’m wondering how you would execue that.
Your business model overall is strong, and plausible. Fantastic work!
Hi Edit,
I have carefully reviewed your presentation for InStage ESL. The elevator pitch for this venture was exceptionally thorough, clear, and engaging. It immediately hooked my attention, was easy to follow, and set up the problem space effectively.
Your proposal addresses a genuine market gap by connecting Canadian Language Benchmarks directly to AI-driven interview practice for newcomers. Your analysis of current market alternatives, such as general language apps and traditional interview preparation tools, shows a strong understanding of where existing solutions fall short. Furthermore, the detailed slide demonstrates how practical and targeted your tool would be for both primary learners and institutional stakeholders like settlement agencies and colleges.
To further strengthen the venture presentation, a few areas could be expanded. Incorporating explicit details on financial sustainability, pricing models, or customer acquisition costs would make the business strategy more complete. Additionally, while secondary users like colleges and employment centers are identified, expanding on how the platform integrates into existing educational software infrastructures would make implementation feel even more viable.
From an investor perspective, this venture presents a compelling case for investment because it targets a rapidly growing market of newcomers needing specialized workplace language integration. The alignment with standardized Canadian Language Benchmarks gives it a distinct competitive advantage over generic language apps. To maximize investor confidence, future iterations should focus more heavily on projected revenue streams and scalability strategies across different institutional partners.

Review
I think that this is a good idea that brings something needed to a gap that is in the multi-lingual market. Due to the project being based around an already existing employment training system, there is already some portion of set up completed and credibility established. I like that there are multiple dimensions that set this program apart from its competitors. One thing I would like to see before deciding if I would invest is some statistics on the need of the program and the current market valuation of this sector. Another thing that I would be interested in seeing is what current plans there are for scale building, especially in terms of involving immigration centers that help immigrants and refugees that move from other countries. As a result, I could see potential government funding in support of this. If all of these have positive indications towards the project’s success, then I would be interested in investing in this project.
FEEDBACK
Strengths:
I really liked the idea behind InStage ESL. The CLB-based differentiation really stood out to me, especially how the AI adjusts the vocabulary, pace, complexity, and questions to meet learners where they are. Combining language development with authentic interview practice seems like such a practical and meaningful way to support newcomers to Canada.
Weaknesses:
One thing I wondered about was how the accuracy of the AI feedback would be monitored, particularly for pronunciation, grammar, and fluency across different CLB levels. Having confidence in that feedback would make an already strong idea even stronger.
Overall, I thought this was a really thoughtful, purposeful, and well-targeted venture. I can definitely see the value in what you are proposing. Great job!
Feedback
Edith, I really like this venture and feel it addresses a very real gap for newcomers to Canada. The presentation was strong and clearly explained how building CLB-aligned instruction into an existing AI interview platform could provide both language development and workplace preparation. I also appreciated that the presentation was honest about the weaknesses and threats rather than only focusing on the positives.
Two areas I would want to explore further are the need for CLB curriculum experts and the dependence on institutional adoption. Both could affect the cost and scalability of the venture. I also appreciated the discussion of threats such as larger AI competitors and changes in government funding, although I would like to see more about how InStage plans to respond to these challenges and maintain its competitive advantage.
Overall, I feel very positive about InStage ESL. It builds on proven technology, targets a clear niche, and has strong potential to make a meaningful difference for newcomers. I recommend funding this venture.
Sorry forgot to comment about funding:
I would recommend funding InStage ESL because it builds on proven technology while addressing a clear and important gap for newcomers to Canada. I would still want to see a strong plan for institutional partnerships and competition from larger AI platforms, but overall I feel confident in the venture’s potential.
REVIEW
Hi Edith,
I was especially interested in this venture because it has a personal connection for me. After living in Japan for many years and experiencing language learning and cultural adjustment firsthand, I understand how important confidence and communication can be when adapting to a new environment. Because of this, I could see the potential value of InStage ESL in helping newcomers bridge the gap between learning English and using it successfully in the workplace.
I also liked that the venture builds on an existing InStage platform rather than starting from scratch. Adding CLB-aligned language development, interview practice, and Canadian workplace communication seems like a natural extension of what InStage already does. Partnerships with settlement agencies, colleges, universities, and newcomer programs could also provide strong opportunities for adoption.
One area I was less certain about was the $1.3 million in proposed seed funding. While the breakdown was useful, I would have liked more explanation behind some of the larger costs, particularly the $350,000 for AI development and $450,000 for staffing. Since InStage already has an AI interview platform, I wondered how much additional development would actually be needed.
Overall, I thought this was a strong and practical venture idea. It addresses a real need, has a clear target audience, and could help newcomers build the language skills and confidence needed to enter the Canadian workforce. I would consider investing in this venture, although I would want more information about the development and staffing costs before committing to the proposed level of funding.
FEEDBACK
Hi Edith,
Fantastic work on InStage ESL! I really like the concept, and your pitch was clear and easy to follow. Your venture addresses a real market gap and provides much needed support for newcomers. By aligning with the standardized Canadian Language benchmarks, you set InStage ESL above other language learning apps, creating a strong selling point.
Congratulations on a great pitch!
Hello Edith,
I really like that you found a niche that is both needed and offers funding opportunities through programs, especially government programs.
I really liked your elevator pitch but found myself trying to read the slides. I struggled to do so and it made it harder to focus on your great pitch. The simpler slides worked great. It was short and engaging.
The venture builds on an existing one and that could lend to value and marketability but it could also be replicated. I think your idea has enough merit to warrant its own platform and them you would have both more control and a product that is yours. I think your venture has enough merit to make it worth it to do so.
I would consider investing if the product was yours and had proper protection in place to make sure it remained unique to you.
Great job!
