Raised in a country where <strong>English fluency<\/strong> is a powerful key to opportunity, Vu was acutely aware of the hurdles that non-native speakers face in perfecting their pronunciation\u2014something she herself struggled with as a student (and so do million of students in Vietnam). But instead of seeing this as a challenge, Vu saw it as a chance to revolutionize how the world learns languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating with an MBA from Stanford University, she asked Dr. Xavier Anguera, a respected speech technologist, to help form the new company. In 2015, they officially launched ELSA Speak. Ever since, ELSA Speak has been recognized by Forbes as one of the 4 best companies utilizing Artificial Intelligence to change the world, and was ranked in the Top 5 AI Apps, along with Microsoft\u2019s Cortana and Google\u2019s Google Allo. My (Singaporean) friend personally was recruited as their first Japan-based Product Manager, and to his comment, the hiring manager reached out to him for coffee in Singapore, and helped him with his application process. I could see Vu\u2019s leadership translates to every corner of the company, where talent can come from anywhere and always seize the chance to make a difference in people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vu Van\u2019s story is a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship isn\u2019t bound by geography but it is rooted in the desire to solve a problem and make the world a better place. Her Vietnamese roots and the challenges she overcame to build ELSA have deeply resonated with me as a fellow Viet. Her story makes me question the assumptions I have about what it takes to become an entrepreneur and encourages me to explore how I can use my own skills to solve problems on a global scale.
