{"id":62,"date":"2013-10-19T18:39:42","date_gmt":"2013-10-20T01:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec522makerspaces2013\/?page_id=62"},"modified":"2013-11-07T13:07:09","modified_gmt":"2013-11-07T20:07:09","slug":"staffing","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec522makerspaces2013\/the-million-dollar-question-guide\/staffing\/","title":{"rendered":"Staffing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Staffing a makerspace really depends on the size and<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec522makerspaces2013\/the-million-dollar-question-guide\/administrative-models\/\"> administrative model<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 A general rule of thumb is that the larger the space, the more staff required.\u00a0 Bolt, a Boston 10,000 SF makerspace, has 8 full-time staff.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/maker-works.com\/wordpress\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maker Works<\/a> a 30,000 SF makerspace has 2 full time staff, plus 8 part &#8211; time as well an executive management team. Some spaces like <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/www.hackerdojo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hacker Dojo<\/a>, require members to spend some time running and maintaining the facility and others like MakeIt Lab have only one staff member.<\/p>\n<p>One type of staff member all makerspaces seem to have are instructors.\u00a0 Instructors can be paid between $30-150 per course.\u00a0 Some makerspaces offer members a discount if they are willing to teach a class, in lieu of paying instructors.<\/p>\n<p>All makerspaces require someone to fill the following roles, whether they are performed by one person, specialists, contractors, volunteers or members.\u00a0 These are, in order of importance:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>CEO\/Director<\/strong> &#8211; responsible for the company vision, organization and business strategy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financial Manager<\/strong> &#8211; aka accountant and tax specialist<\/li>\n<li><strong>Facilities Manager<\/strong> -performs regular repairs and maintenance of the space and tools<\/li>\n<li><strong>Development<\/strong> &#8211; brings new business and help grow the organization.\u00a0 May also be responsible for marketing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Services Coordinator<\/strong> &#8211; responsible for greeting members, providing a point of contact, answer phones, email, social media; may also be responsible for volunteer coordination.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marketing Coordinator<\/strong> &#8211; responsible for marketing, website, promotion, social media publicity etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Program Developer<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8211; design classes and curriculum<\/li>\n<li><strong>Instructors\u00a0<\/strong> &#8211; prepare and teach the classes<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Discussion:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you were starting a makerspace, which functions would you consider vital and who would perform them?\u00a0 (Note: this may tie in to your <a title=\"Administrative Models\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec522makerspaces2013\/the-million-dollar-question-guide\/administrative-models\/\">administrative model<\/a> and <a title=\"Types of Makerspaces\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec522makerspaces2013\/makerspaces\/types-of-makerspaces\/\">type of makerspace<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion Summary:<\/strong> Based on the ETEC522 2013 Winter Term 1 cohort discussion regarding vital functions in a makerspace and who would perform them, the following points were raised:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The scope and aim of the makerspace will in part determine which functions are vital<\/li>\n<li>The maturity (proximity to release date) of the products under development in the space will also impact the requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Specialist are always a valuable resource, such as specialists in areas of finance, management and staffing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please view the cohort experience in the comments below.
