{"id":5809,"date":"2011-09-30T07:31:05","date_gmt":"2011-09-30T15:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec522sept11\/?p=5809"},"modified":"2011-09-30T07:31:05","modified_gmt":"2011-09-30T15:31:05","slug":"brainpop-interesting-beginnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.ubc.ca\/etec522sept11\/2011\/09\/30\/brainpop-interesting-beginnings\/","title":{"rendered":"BrainPOP: Interesting beginnings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">BrainPOP is the idea of Dr. Avraham Kadar a pediatrician and immunologist.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This venture began as a way for Dr. Kadar to explain difficult medical concepts to children and expanded to various parts of K-13 Curriculum including ESL. BrainPOP includes a variety of movies about a particular topic with interactive quizzes and activities to reinforce the information in the video.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The studies (by BrainPOP (so take with a grain of salt) shows that students learn much better using BrainPOPs videos and interactive quizzes.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>Dr. Kadar\u2019s motivation to create this company- explaining difficult information to children is the breeding ground for a great venture. I have never encountered information like this for children to understand medical concepts.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>This seems to be particularly helpful for children and their siblings with life altering diseases like cancer.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It is both fun and interesting.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>His expansion to the regular school curriculum might not have been the best choice, as the market seems saturated with fun activities for children.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The first part of the motivation of his ideas seems original but not his emergence on the field of k-12 education.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The BrainPOP team consists of twenty-two various \u201cadvisors.\u201d There are advisors for Math, Science, English, Social Sciences, Phycology, Health, Writing, Music, Art, Special Education, and Technology.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The team seems very well rounded with people assessing all areas of the spectrum. The BrainPOP board consists of a similar number of people as the advisory board with positions ranging from CEO to District Relations.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Dr. Kadar began as a CEO but has been replaced by Nadav Kadar (a possible relative) and the vice president of the company being Maya Kadar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>This company seems to be well represented and has an interesting product.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>While I feel that BrainPOP is an interesting tool for physicians I do not feel that it will make a big impact in the classroom.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>It is an interesting resource to use but nothing more than that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Please see click for a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.naomi.org\/who_we_are.html\"> picture of Dr. Avraham Kadar\u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I apologize for no embedded picture.\u00a0 I am working through some tech issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BrainPOP is the idea of Dr. Avraham Kadar a pediatrician and immunologist.\u00a0 This venture began as a way for Dr. Kadar to explain difficult medical concepts to children and expanded to various parts of K-13 Curriculum including ESL.
